Desmond Richardson

Artistic Director

Desmond Richardson, 52, has served in his current position as artistic director for Complexions Contemporary Ballet, which he founded with Dwight Rhoden, since 1994.


Prior to this position, Richardson was a dancer with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater from 1987-94. During his tenure as co-artistic director, Richardson also danced with the Frankfurt Ballet from 1994-96; and with American Ballet Theater from 1997-1998, where he became the first African-American to be named Principal Dancer.


Other stage credits include the role of Tony in Twyla Tharp’s production of “Movin’ Out”, an appearance in the movie production of “Chicago” and in the Burt Bacharach/ Hal David production of “The Look of Love.” Richardson has appeared as guest performer and choreographer in numerous television programs such as the Oscars, the Emmys, and the series “So you Think You Can Dance” for six seasons.


Richardson received a Bessie Award in 1992 as well as a Tony award nomination for his role in “Fosse” in 1999. Other awards include the Dance Magazine Award, the Capezio Award, the Ailey Apex and LA Ovation awards.



Dwight Rhoden

Dwight Rhoden, 59, founded Complexions Contemporary Ballet with Desmond Richardson in 1994, where he serves in his current positions as artistic director and choreographer.


Prior to this position, Rhoden was a dancer with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater from 1987-94; the Ballets Jazz de Montréal from 1985-87; and with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company from 1982-1985


Rhoden has choreographed over 80 ballets for Complexions Contemporary Ballet and his repertoire includes commissioned works for Romare Bearden, Diana Vishneva and the Marinsky Theater. Rhoden collaborated with renowned dancers from the modern and ballet worlds: Carmen De Lavallade, Wendy Whelan, Misty Copeland and Gus Solomons.


Rhoden began his dance training at the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company School and is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Boston Conservatory. For a complete list of Mr. Rhoden’s ballets, follow this link.
